What does it do?

The pattern of conditions Xiao Chai Hu Tang deals with is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as Shao Yang Syndrome or Lesser Yang Stage disorder. Traditionally, this means that an external evil has penetrated the body (such as Wind) but was not released properly or completely. The evil then sinks deeper into the body, becoming stuck in the level described as in-between the interior and exterior energetic systems. According to TCM, this "half-interior, half-exterior" level corresponds primarily with the GallBladder and Liver organs/meridians. Typical presentations of this pattern include a feeling of both chills and heat, a feeling of rib-sides fullness, a bitter taste in the mouth, reduced appetite, and short temper.

Xiao Chai Hu Tang consists of seven herbs. The chief Chinese herb, Chai Hu (Bupleurum) is an important herb for dealing irritability due to Liver Qi stagnation. Chai Hu is cooling and soothes the Liver with an ascending action that prevents the evil from penetrating further into the interior. Here, Chai Hu is combined with Huang Qin (Scutellaria) which aids in draining heat from the Liver and Gall Bladder system and vents evils. Together, these two herbs have a powerful calming effect.

Zhi Ban Xia (prepared Pinellia) and Sheng Jiang (Ginger) work together to harmonize the middle burner (Spleen/Stomach) by transforming phlegm, directing rebellious Qi downward, and improving appetite. Dang Shen (Codonopsis) is a powerful Qi and Blood tonic that assists in expelling evils by restoring the body's own constitutional strength. Da Zao (Jujube) and Gan Cao (Licorice) harmonize the bitter properties of some of the other medicinals in the formula and also mildly assist Chai Hu.

Together, these seven herbs have a remarkable synergistic effect that can be applied to a wide range of presentations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It really works. I bough this herbal medicine a month ago for myself in case I need it. two weeks ago, my daughter got the typical "shao yang" symptoms: felt bitterness in her mouth, felt dryness in her throat, felt wanting to vomit, and sometimes felt chill and sometimes felt hot. The night I gave her the Xiao Chai Hu pian, all the above symptoms diminished and she got a good sleep. She is a western medicine trained doctor. Originally, she did not believe the herbal medicine will help until it proved otherwise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is my new Active Herb formula fav! I love Bupleuri Relaxe! It’s like a gentler form of Liver FireClear (long dan xie gan tang)and helps my liver qi stagnation and resulting liver/gallbladder heat and PMS tremendously! My significant other thanks you! As a result of clearing my liver, my digestion is more normal too! I should mention I take double doses of all Active Herb tablet formulas... I’m 6 feet tall and seem to need more to feel the effects. Thank you, Active Herb, for these wonderful products!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brought great relief to fullness around my sternum I suffer from allergies and liver problems, and I have no idea which was bothering me more when I started having hot flashes and such fullness around my sternum that I felt short of breath. My TCM doctor gave me a combination of two patent formulas, and Xiao Chai Hu Pian (Bupleuri Relaxe) was one of them. It really relaxed that tightness around my sternum and allowed me to breathe and relax. After a few days of taking it, the symptoms cleared.

I don't know how to speak about this product in terms of Chinese medicine, but subjectively it calms my mood (reducing anger and bursts of irritation) and it helps with my appetite and digestion (less bloating and sluggishness).

Do you recommend the tablets or pills if I want to make a tea with the product, i.e., will the tablets dissolve in hot water or am I better off emptying capsules? I dislike swallowing tablets/capsules, have been making tea with herbal granules. Thank you.

    Asked by: KarenD
Hi, Thanks for the question. Yes, the tablets but not pills can be easily dissolved in hot water and served as tea.
