What does it do?
One may not believe it, but cough is the number one reason Americans seek medical attention,
according to the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). Cough is annoying
and disturbing in life and at work. Many OTC cough medicines are around, yet studies found
OTC cough medicines are clinically not effective in relieving cough, which prompted
ACCP to issue a guideline against the use of OTC cough medications for young children.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), cough is due to attacks of the Lung by pathogenic factors
coming from either the outside such as wind-cold, wind-heat (commmon cold or flu in modern terms) or
the inside of the body such as chronic bronchitis and asthma. Cough displays various TCM patterns,
depending on the cause and associated symptoms, and may require use of different Chinese herbal formulas
(learn more).
CoughsOffTM is our signature formula for coughs and coughs with wheezing that are
caused by the common cold and flu.† It may also apply to coughs due to chronic bronchitis.†
CoughsOffTM contains the following Chinese herbs that act together to clear phlegm and relieve cough.
Zi Wan (Purple Aster root) is an important Chinese herb for clearing phlegm and relieving
cough. It is slightly warm in nature and suitable for various types of coughs, acute or chronic, cold or heat etc.
Jie Geng (Platycodon root) ventilates the Lung and clears phlegm. The Chinese herb can be used for
coughs caused by either external or internal pathogenic factors, whether coughs are cold or heat. It
strengthens the action of purple aster root in removing phlegm.
Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia root) is a commonly used herb that transforms phlegm and stops vomiting.
The Chinese herb is warm and drying and best used for phlegm possessing cold or dampness in property (for example, phlegm
accumulated due to weak digestion function is damp).
Chen Pi (Tangerine peel) expels dampness and transforms phlegm. The Chinese herb acts together with prepared pinellia root
for cough and asthma due to excessive phlegm in the Lung.
Gan Cao (Licorice root) harmonizes the digestive function and synchronizes the action of multiple herbs. The Chinese herb
also moistens the Lung, relieves cough and transforms phlegm. It is often combined with platycodon root to clear phlegm and relieve
sore throat.
Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry root bark) drains heat in the Lung and moves down the rebellious Qi of the Lung
to relieve asthma. The Chinese herb also promotes urination and reduce water retention and thus edema.
Ting Li Zi (Lepidium seed) also drains the Lung to relieve wheezing, promote urination to reduce water retention
and phlegm. The herb is often used with Mulberry root bark to help relieve cough with wheezing and phlegm.
