Ge Gen Tang Wan (Ge Geng Tang Wan, Ge Geng Tang Pian,
葛根汤丸),
literally "Kudzu Decoction" (Pueraria Decoction) in Chinese,
is a classic Chinese herbal formula invented 1800 years ago for the common cold and headache
caused by external Wind and Cold. A new study published on Jan 2009 by a Yale University doctor
indicates that it is effective on cluster headache.1

What does it do?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), our body is vulnerable to attacks of exogenous pathogenic factors like Wind and Cold.
The Wind and Cold attack first invades the surface and the body responds with a quick onset of symptoms such as alternating chills and fever,
headache, muscle aches, sneezing, cough, nasal congestion, runny nose. Stiff neck and no sweating is also characteristic of the
Wind-Cold symptoms.
Ge Gen Tang induces sweating to release the exterior symptoms and dispel Wind-Cold.
Gen Gen (Pueraria or Kudzu root) is the chief Chinese herb in the formula and acts to dispel
Wind-Cold, relieve muscle aches and generate fluids. Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) helps dispel
Wind-Cold and promote sweating. Bai Shao (Paeoniae Alba) and Gan Cao (Licorice) also help generate
fluids and relieve pain. Ginger and Jujubae harmonize the spleen and the stomach and support
the Qi energy. Our Ge Gen Tang also includes several other pain relieving Chinese herbs to
further enhance the effect of relieving headache and neck stiffness.
In the latest research, Dr. Sewell studied the use of Kudzu among cluster headache sufferers who
learn about Kudzu on the Internet through trial and error. The study found that various Kudzu preparations
may cut the frequency, severity, and duration of cluster headache.1 The response is
correlated to the dose taken each day with the lowest dose least responsive. The study is gratifying
in terms of both validating the ancient wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and the courage of
self treatment enabled by the Internet.
